Rant

WTF is a smooth prime? Did you know that primes can be smooth , as opposed to say, ROUGH primes?

You know, there was some point in time when I was "asked" to learn this in a class. I said, "The hell with it, I can still manage without knowing it." and ended up doing ok.

Except now, I need to know what is a smooth prime. Who DECIDES that primes are smooth or not? Argh.

EDIT: Did you know that as a phd student I am supposed to know LIKE THE BACK OF MY HAND what is the probability a randomly chosen value is a prime from a set of integers with bit-size b? OR even better yet. I am supposed to know conditional probability like it's my best friend? And I am supposed to just know "If I have 10 numbers, of which half are odd, the probability that I chose one that is prime?" And if I don't, then I don't know the "BASICS" and the "FUNDAMENTALS"? Basically that I am stupid? Yeah, I didn't either.
